It is so easy to set yourself up.  Calligraphy pens can be brought from any art and craft shop and some good quality, smooth paper that does not allow the ink to smudge or bleed.  You can experiment with words, shapes and letterforms, as there are no hard or fast rule to writing and creating shapes.  You need plenty of practice, patience and the love of learning this art.

Anyone of any age and ability can learn.  Calligraphy in its name means ‘beautiful writing’.  Anyone can learn, the secret is having a passion, willing and interest in learning how to write calligraphy.  It is fun and there is not time limit, you can take as much time as you like until you are happy with your ability.

It is a good idea to invest in a good quality calligraphy kit. It pays to buy good equipment to use, such as a quality calligraphy pen or sheaffer calligraphy pens, Winsor and Newton inks, smooth calligraphy paper and calligraphy markers.  You can enrol in a calligraphy class if you like, to get to know other people who are interested in the same hobby as you and have some fun in the process.

Learn to Draw

Learning to draw basic shapes and pictures can help support your learning of how to write calligraphy.  You can draw beautiful illustrations around the letter shapes to really set off your calligraphy.  Drawing encourages good penmanship and control of the pen.  The ideas are endless.
